When the Bugs Come Marching In...

July 29, 2009

It started out innocently enough. About a month ago, I found one of the ugly buggers meandering through my bedroom. I peered down at it with disbelief.Never before had I seen one of these bugs in my house.

Every summer my parents would have these nasty critters in their basement, our church has them in the Fellowship Hall, but NEVER had they been in my home.

Little did I know that this was just the beginning of the onslaught of the nasty multi-legged bug plague. Our pest control man sprayed his special "kills bugs not people" poison around the doors and walls. The army continued its advance. Jason put down some Sevin dust, which they laughed and pointed at as they continued their march to the Sea or the bathroom, whatever they reached first. It seemed as though midnight was the "witching hour" for critter cruising. I am something of a night-owl, so it was not unusual for me to run across multitudes of these icky suckers as they traipsied to their demise.

The only three things that have proven fatal to them are: (1.) Size 8.5 shoes (I wear a size 6 shoe, but a 7 feels so good that I wear an 8.5), applied directly on them. (2.) Being flushed down a watery grave. [Yes, there really is one in there. And don't judge me for having a potty lid cozy.] (3.) Small brown chihuahuas that use them as playthings. They are very small, i.e., about this long: ------------- . They have lots of legs and move relatively quickly. They apparently have the ability to materialize out of thin air. As soon as I flush one, another one teleports in a-la' "Star Trek." I would bet that I've been responsible for the death of an entire rain forest's worth of toilet paper, because I refuse to touch them directly as I escort them on their journey to Beulah Land.

I know I'm not completely alone in this. My neighbors have complained about them too. One with a pool has to scoop net-fulls of them out of her pool every day. One of Emma's friends told us that her Mom has to vacuum three times a day to get them all up. (Really? I keep a pretty clean house, but I don't think I care THAT much.)

So, what gives? Do y'all have these things in your houses? What are they? Can they be defeated? I am, literally, two flushes away from calling in the National Guard. They must be destroyed, PETA be darned!

I added this post to Wendy's "Life is Funny" Carnival. If you need a good laugh, check it out!

Um, eww. Nope, don't get those here. But we do have prehistoric ants. First time I saw them I freaked out. Ick.

We use the toilet too as a burial for insects I can't stand!!! And I just recently got rid of my toilet cozies. I was shocked that they're not "in" anymore!!! Oh well, I'm a little behind. I hope you get a handle on the bugs!!

If you have a pest control contract...(waynes comes here once a quarter I believe) you can call in between treatments if you still have bugs and they SHOULD re-spray for free.

The look like millipedes, which come out after excessive rains.

Yes, we have them too and they're disgusting!

I don't have them in my home, but a few weeks ago I was on vacation and saw a HUGE one of these in the bedroom. I was going to bed and lifted one of the "pretty" pillows off the bed, only to find the granddaddy of these nasty things on the pillow underneath. My husband practically had a heart attack I screamed so loud. I hope you get rid of them soon!

We don't have those, but this time of year we get those big ole brown wood spiders. The pest control guy says there's he can do to kill them. We have a LOT of trees and we just have to deal with them. My size 11 shoe works pretty well.

I don't have those, and I don't want them either.

I will never get rid of my toilet cover cozy. It has seen me through some difficult times....

We don't get those, but we do get some earwigs, which we hate, too. Best of blessigs in getting rid of them, I truly hate bugs.

And oyu know, i tried to go buy a toilet seat cozie, and the one I bought at walmart was too small for my toilet seat cover. I tried for months to stretch and make it work, but after the last time of trying to pull one corner down, I said to heck with it and threw it out. So I guess I am unintentionally up to date on my toilet fashions. ;)

I have only seen the one so far on my arm. lol I have kept an eye out though. I'd much rather find these critters than all the spiders I am still finding EVERYWHERE!!!

We get earwigs, they move slower. I used to keep a roll of heavy duty tape around to "pick" them up. Then I would fold the tape on itself and throw away. EWW! But it's better than smooshing bug guts in your carpet.... :)

Nope, we have Lady Bugs...and they are not lucky.

Good luck on getting rid of them.

Love,
Rene

You made me giggle at your shoe size preference - beautiful way of wording that!

I do hate it when bugs think that they can invade, but the bug that prefers our house is ladybugs...so I'm no help.

We have the same invaders. We have used pesticides but nothing seems to work except the shoe or paper towel. Have you had any success getting rid of them for good?
